Tomoko Kobayashi reopened her inn in northeastern Fukushima to bring a sense of normal life back to her deserted hometown five years after the nuclear disaster. She was reassured by her own radiation monitoring results. At the Futabaya Ryokan today, the latest versions of color-coded radiation maps of the region hang on the wall, a routine she has followed since the 2016 reopening of the inn. That is the foundation of her life in her hometown 15 years after one of history’s worst nuclear disasters.
