Japan said it plans to use some of the soil removed from near the Fukushima nuclear plant on flower beds outside Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s office and other public building to show it is safe to reuse. The soil, which retains low-level radioactivity, has been stored since the disaster at the site in 2011. The government has said it will find final disposal sites for the soil by 2045. Officials came up with plans to reduce the soil volume by using it to build roads and in other public works projects across the country. So far, no municipality has volunteered to take it.
