The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says it is delaying by one month the planned cutoff of satellite data that helps forecasters track hurricanes. Monday’s announcement comes after meteorologists and scientists warned of severe consequences if officials had gone through with the plan to discontinue the key data on June 30 in the midst of this year’s hurricane season. The data is collected by three weather satellites that the agency jointly runs with the Defense Department. Officials said the data was initially planned to be cut off on June 30 due to a cybersecurity risk.
