In Portugal, the cool of the night is when some vineyards harvest grapes

Portuguese vineyards are harvesting grapes at night to combat rising temperatures. This practice, rooted in tradition, helps preserve the freshness of grapes by avoiding daytime heat. In the Alentejo region, known for its vineyards, temperatures can rise to 40 Celsius or 104 Fahrenheit during the day. By night they drop significantly, making conditions more favorable for both grapes and harvesters. Bárbara Monteiro, co-owner of the Herdade Da Fonte Santa vineyard, says night harvesting began in 2019. Workers now prefer the cooler schedule, which allows them to enjoy the day. Climate change has made this practice increasingly necessary to maintain wine quality.
