Biovac starts trials on South Africa’s first domestically developed cholera vaccine

Researchers in South Africa have launched clinical trials for the first vaccine developed entirely in the country. The oral cholera vaccine, created by Biovac, is being tested for use by adults. Future trials will compare it to existing vaccines. If successful, it could be available in Africa by 2028. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi emphasized the importance of local vaccine development after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted Africa’s reliance on imported vaccines. Cholera remains a significant issue in Africa, with outbreaks often linked to poor water access. The World Health Organization reports millions of people are affected by cholera annually.
