A citizen campaign returns iconic kiwi birds to New Zealand’s capital after a century-long absence

New Zealanders are working to bring the kiwi back to the hills around Wellington. The Capital Kiwi Project has relocated 250 kiwis to the area, aiming to restore the bird’s presence after more than a century. On Tuesday, seven kiwi were released into the hills. Earlier, they made their first visit to New Zealand’s Parliament. The project is part of a broader effort to eliminate introduced predators by 2050. Thousands of traps protect the birds, and the Wellington colony has a 90% chick survival rate. Community involvement is crucial, with many residents actively participating in conservation efforts.
