Guatemalan authorities say activity at the Fuego volcano is gradually decreasing after it began two days ago. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction said on Wednesday that it urges caution, warning that rainfall from an eastern tropical wave could trigger deadly volcanic mudflows known as lahars. Some evacuees have returned home voluntarily, but authorities recommend following evacuation instructions. Approximately 1,700 people have been evacuated from at least 18 communities since the eruption began Monday. No deaths or damage have been reported. Fuego, or the Volcano of Fire, is one of Guatemala’s most active. It is near the capital and has a history of deadly eruptions.
