It’s another meteoric rise for what’s called the largest piece of Mars on Earth. The 54-pound rock fetched nearly $5.3 million at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York on Wednesday. The buyer’s identity was not disclosed. The red, brown and gray meteorite is believed to have been blown off the surface of Mars by a massive asteroid strike. A meteorite hunter found it in the Sahara Desert in Niger in 2023. Sotheby’s says it’s 70% larger than the next biggest piece of Mars found on this planet. Also up for sale Wednesday was a juvenile Ceratosaurus dinosaur skeleton that sold for $30.5 million.
