5.8 magnitude earthquake hits Peru, damaging buildings and injuring 27

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Peru, injuring 27 people and damaging some buildings. Officials report no deaths. The quake hit late Tuesday, east-southeast of Pampa de Tate in the Ica region. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the depth at 35 miles. Peruvian Defense Minister Amadeo Flores inspected damaged buildings in the city, including San Luis Gonzaga University. Earthquakes are common in Peru, as the country lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for its volcanoes and fault lines.
