Face-to-face with ancient Rome: Exhibition in Hungary brings forgotten faces to life

A new exhibition in Hungary brings ancient residents of the Roman frontier city of Aquincum to life with detailed facial reconstructions. The display in Budapest features over a dozen skulls using DNA analysis and other methods from archaeology and anthropology. A co-curator says the goal is to connect today’s people with those from nearly 2,000 years ago. He says “most of them belonged to the lower middle class, which is the least remembered segment of Roman society.” DNA analysis reveals details like skin, hair and eye color, while the reconstructions offer a glimpse into diverse origins and daily lives.
