The threat of light pollution puts the world’s darkest skies in the Atacama Desert at risk

The Atacama Desert in Chile offers some of the clearest views of the universe, thanks to its dry climate, high altitude and isolation from light pollution. It’s home to major astronomical projects like the Extremely Large Telescope. However, these skies face threats from urban and industrial development. Last year, a proposed green energy project near the Paranal Observatory raised concerns about light pollution and other disruptions. Although the project was canceled, scientists warn that outdated sky preservation laws leave the area vulnerable. Efforts are underway to update regulations and protect this vital astronomical hub.
