African and Commonwealth nations in Kenya urge quick execution of a key treaty protecting oceans

African and Commonwealth nations have called for a swift implementation of a landmark treaty protecting the high seas. This call to action was made Tuesday at the 11th Our Ocean Conference in the Kenyan city of Mombasa. The conference is being hosted by an African nation for the first time. It’s focusing on critical ocean issues like climate change and pollution. Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry highlighted the need for faster progress to execute the High Seas Treaty. He noted that only 10% of the ocean is under protection with a mere 3% highly protected. The treaty aims to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
